We’re going on a bear hunt
There is the most delightful book written by genius (in my opinion) children’s author, Michael Rosen.
It’s about a family going on a bear hunt. It’s full of onomatopoeia and rhyme, which we say appeals to younger children but let’s be honest, it captivates us too! Especially when it’s so cleverly written.
There is a particular message in the book that I believe we need reminding of, especially when we are faced with hard things in life. Each time the family encounter obstacles this phrase is repeated…
We can’t go over it,
We can’t go under it,
Oh no! We’ve got to go through it!
And that is the sad and the amazing truth. Sometimes we can’t fix it, we can’t make it better, we can’t ignore it. We just gotto go through it. It’s sad, because it’s hard at times (and I know this might be a gross understatement for some).
But it’s amazing because we’ll never know what ourselves or our children are capable of if we don’t go through it. If we don’t try repair relationships, forgive, be vulnerable, deal with loss, start that new venture… whatever the hard thing is for you. If we don’t decide to go through it and “do the work” as Brene Brown puts it, then we will never know what it’s like to come out the other side and thrive.
Because we can do hard things and come out the other side. It is possible. When we choose to become better and not bitter through the hard things, we can thrive. We can’t always do it alone. We can’t always do it all. But we can decide to ask for help, to take a step until strength for the next one comes.
